Colin O’Callaghan joined the Breast Cancer Research Group in 2024 as Head of Clinical Trials, helping to bring promising research directly into the clinical setting.

Since joining the team, Colin has led a number of important initiatives focused on breast cancer that has spread to the brain.

These include HER2 Surveillance, a clinical trial being conducted in collaboration with The Royal Marsden in London. The study is investigating enhanced MRI screening for patients who may be at increased risk of developing brain metastases, with the aim of understanding whether disease can be identified earlier.

Colin is also driving the PRISM clinical study, which examines the genetic makeup of breast cancer brain metastases to identify changes that could potentially be targeted with existing or new treatments. PRISM is a multi-centre study recruiting patients in Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Why This Research Matters

Earlier detection and more personalised treatment could make an important difference for patients at risk of, or living with, brain metastases. Colin’s work is helping to bring research out of the laboratory and into clinical studies where discoveries can begin to influence patient care.

Turning research into real-world impact is central to our ambition at Breast Cancer Ireland. It is how we Rewrite the Future
