Alessandra Allotta
Alessandra Allotta joined Professor Leonie Young’s research group after completing a Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology at the University of Naples Federico II, where her award-winning research focused on why some breast cancers become resistant to treatment.
Now a PhD researcher, Alessandra is investigating one of the greatest challenges in advanced breast cancer: how and why breast cancer cells spread to the brain.
Her research focuses particularly on HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancers, looking at the biological signals that allow cancer cells to travel, survive and grow within the brain.
By understanding these processes, Alessandra hopes to identify weaknesses within metastatic cancer cells that could potentially be targeted with new treatments.
Why This Research Matters
When breast cancer spreads to the brain, treatment becomes significantly more challenging. Understanding exactly how cancer cells are able to spread and survive there could help researchers identify new ways to stop that process and develop more effective treatments for advanced breast cancer.
Every discovery gives us another opportunity to change the course of this disease. Together, we can Rewrite the Future.
