Over 6,000 men women and children, all donned in pink, crossed the starting line for Breast Cancer Ireland’s Great Pink Run with Avonmore Slimline Milk which took place in the Phoenix Park on Saturday, August 27th. Now in its 6th year, Olympic silver medallist and 5000m world champion Sonia O’Sullivan, once again lead the 10K Challenge which was followed by the 5K Fun Run.
TV3’s Elaine Crowley, rugby pundit Shane Byrne, Presenter Lottie Ryan and stylist Cathy O’Connor along with a host of others enjoyed the carnival atmosphere in the park where many of the joggers, walkers and runners wore elaborate pink costumes, painted their faces and ran along to the music.
CEO Aisling Hurley comments “We are delighted with the success of the Great Pink Run, which has gone from strength to strength, raising over half a million euro to support breast cancer awareness and research programmes nationally. Everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer and this is an opportunity to show support and run for them”
All costs have been covered by the generosity of the lead sponsors Avonmore Slimline Milk as well as its4women, Vincent & Beatty Solicitors, Dunnes Stores, 98FM and Alkermes who ensure that 100% of the funds raised from entries and individual sponsorship goes directly to fund ongoing efforts. It is estimated that Breast Cancer Ireland will raise in excess of €200,000 from entries and participant’s sponsorship.
Linda Sheehan, Avonmore Slimline Milk “Avonmore Slimline Milk were very proud to once again be lead sponsor of the Great Pink Run. The atmosphere was fantastic and there was a real sense of camaraderie and positive support for a great cause”
The organisers have noted that this year more people have registered for the 10k challenge than in previously years which appears to be reflective of more confident runners participating. There was also an increase in men registering for the run this year.
