It was a sea of pink in Kilkenny Castle Park on Sunday September 10th as over 1,500 women, men and children took part in the Great Pink Run with Avonmore Slimline Milk raising over €350,000 to support Breast Cancer Ireland’s pioneering research and awareness programmes, nationally.
Olympian Sonia O’Sullivan set the pace with support from the side-line hurling legend DJ Carey, as over 1,500 participated in either the 10K challenge or the 5K fun.
Many of those who participated wore elaborate pink costumes and painted their faces in show of support for the many thousands of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in this country.
This is the fifth year that Sonia has taken part and she comments, “The Great Pink Run is a great excuse to burn off some energy and have a target to aim for but an even better reason is getting together with friends and family to raise much-needed funds for continued research into this disease and to help raise awareness of good breast health”
Aisling Hurley, CEO of Breast Cancer Ireland comments “The Great Pink Run has gone from strength to strength over the past seven years and this year we have exceeded the targets we set in terms of registrations and monies raised online. Thanks to the support of our long-time supporters and sponsors including Glanbia, Beacon Hospital, Irish Life Health, Aut Even Hospital Kilkenny, Vincent and Beatty Solicitors, Its4Women, Alkermes and Dunnes Stores we can ensure that 100% of funds raised from entries and individual sponsorship go directly to fund our ongoing efforts”
Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Glanbia, Mark Garrett says, “We are delighted to be lead sponsors of the Great Pink Run for the third year and to have been part of the sea of pink with our colleagues and friends”
The Great Pink Run Kilkenny 2018 is being held this year on Sunday October 14th and registration is now open.
